Many have attempted to create a cordless radar detector and have done it unsuccessfully. The biggest complaint is the battery life and that it affects sensitivity. Escort has again tackled this dilemma with the Solo S2 cordless radar detector. The price is reasonable around three hundred and fifty dollars.

The Solo brings you the performance of the Escort Passport line with the convince that comes with a cordless radar detector. This is for the enthusiast who takes there detector between cars or have a motorcycle or if you are annoyed by the power cord hanging down your dash. In today’s time with the non smoking movement many vehicles have limited power sources spread in different places in the car that is not near the dash and such will cause the owner to spread the power cord taught or have limited reach. This is the radar detector for you.

The Solo has a compact case low in profile and platinum in color. All controls except for the mute button are on the front of the detector which is dominated by a liquid crystal display.

The Solo S2 offers superior range and performance and offers many advanced features such as the Escorts Expert Mete, Mute threat display and Auto sensitivity mode. Expert meter will detect and alert you to up to 8 radar threats at once. Auto sensitivity mode automatically adjusts sensitivity levels up to your driving conditions and virtually eliminates false alarms.
The over all advantage is the cordless aspect to the serious driver.

Beltronic’s one of the leaders in radar detectors is looking to serve the needs of there customers in all price ranges. The Vector 955 is rated as the best performance radar detector under two hundred dollars.

The Vector is small with a housing covered with matte aluminum with black buttons and large raised 955 numerals in black chrome. The display is very readable and friendly with a its red text displays in a variety of lighting conditions as opposed to competitors who have high glare factors and cause you to view your detector all day reflecting on your windshield.

Performance is key to any radar detector and in the price range of around two hundred dollars the Vector 955 exceeds all competitors. The Vector is immune to VG-2 radar detector detection. It has an auto scan feature that looks for all bands (X, K, Ka, and Ku) and laser. The Vector has trimmed down its X band city mode sensitivity which severely limits urban false alarms. Also has wonderful X highway mode functions. The Vector has 8 times range provided superior advanced warning of radar signals.

The Vector is very quiet in town and most resistant to false alerts to nearby radar detectors as other competitor’s lack. Its auto voice alerts allows you to keep your eyes on the road and still know what is ahead and when to slow down.

See the details on the Escort Passport 9500i Radar Detector

Escort Passport 9500i has revolutionized the radar detector category yet again. The first detector to use GPS to lock out known false alerts. Most seasoned owner upon setting up there detectors is to drive to there locally known “ false alerts” or hot spots to immediately reveal weaknesses in the detector. Escort knowing this has gone and tackled the problem.

Escort 9500i has tackled this issue with its smart cord. The standard smart cord used by pressing the mute button will allow the owner to mark false alert locations such as grocery stores, pharmacists, automatic door openers, motion sensors etc…
The 9500i has numerous features that will keep most happy. This detector has an auto volume feature which automatically increases the alert volume when ambient noises are in the vehicle (This feature is especially nice for motorcycles as well) are too loud due to music, wind, or the occasional nagging backseat driver. Staying with volume control the 9500i has both audible voice and tone alerts. Audible warning for radar and laser will start with a tone and then be followed by a voice alert of the band. The display indicates the vehicles present speed, and then indicates the signal strength of radar signal and a few seconds later will auto mute. Each of the four radar bands (X, K, Ka, Ku) as well as POP and laser have there own distinct tones for easier identification.

The 9500i speed alert function will display the vehicles speed during the first few seconds of the alert as long as the vehicle is traveling above fifteen miles per hour. Ultra bright alphanumeric displays using 280 LED’s and also provides actual numeric frequency for any radar signal. The displays can be bought in either red or blue. The blue display is higher price although it should be mentioned that there is no performance differences but due to the gases used to make the blue costs considerably more than the red. The detector also has a brightness adjustment feature and backlit buttons with five brightness settings starting at full dark to auto. The auto will set the brightness of display according to ambient light in the vehicle and the backlit control buttons make it easier to adjust options during night drives.

Along with the GPS component the detector comes with ability to interface with laser jammers providing high end radar detection and laser jammer capabilities. The software allows backup and to true lock data to permanently locate and document known speed traps, cameras, and other places of interest.

Escort has really created an affordable radar detector with many features that will make owners happy about the investment.

See the details on the Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector

The new Escort Passport 8500 X50 replaces the 8500 model that has been on the market and well known. The X50 designed for driving enthusiasts, delivers the best possible protection in its class. This detector is in the top lineup of those within a moderate price range and also has dashboard mounting capability.

The 8500 X50 is available in red or blue display with the blue display at a higher price. The reason for the price difference in the blue display is that the gases used to make the blue cost considerably more than in the red. Controls on the X50 are minimalist; a wheel switch will adjust both power and volume and to simplify more there are two buttons with multifunction capabilities on top of the detector that handles everything else except for the manual muting.

The 8500 X50’s signal strength is indicated audibly by the “beep frequency”, also seen visually by a blue graph bar that’s lights progressively as the signal strength rises. The higher end detectors use text displays and a visual bar graph top spell out exactly what the detectors alert means. The X50 will notify with a letter such as X,K,or Ka this method is much easier to read and understand then a row of LED lights indicating signal strength. This detector uses an ultra bright matrix display with 280 LED lights

The 8500 has the industry’s most intuitive method of setting its user-selectable menu options City and Auto modes function as other detectors in this range and works effectively. The nine menu options give it an uncommonly wider level of adjustment to meet driver’s ratification and style. It also has seven types of display text, and will display up to eight simultaneous signals; four X bands and two each for K and Ka bands.

The radar receiver on the 8500 X 50 is the new “V-tuned” which provides extreme detection range on all police and radar and conventional and “instant-on” radar, including the new POP mode radar threat, X band and up to fifty percent more range than the original. This detector offers 360 degree radar and laser detection. POP mode works by sending out a quick “bursts” of pulse radar at approximately 67 milliseconds. This burst of signal will not be detected by over 85% of the radar detectors in use today.

Labeled as the “well mannered” drivers companion in auto mode the X50 is unusually resistant to false alarms and as anyone who has owned or researched radar detectors this is the number one complaint. Auto mode which is used primarily in city travel is where many of the false alarms will occur so this is a huge selling option.

The Escort Passport 8500 X50 is a favorite among motorcycle riders. In addition to the ear phone jack feature so that the rider can hear alerts. Many other detectors are not designed for motorcycle use due to long cords and poor mounting options, and that they are not weatherproof and the X50 has made this an option for motorcycle riders.

See the details on the Beltronics RX65 Radar Detector

Beltronic is the industry leader in technology and innovation as well as the most sophisticated radar and laser detectors in the world. The Bel Professional Series, RX65 (also known as the GX 65) is designed exclusively for the demanding driver and comes with many features.

The RX 65 has many bells and whistles that make this radar detector a fine specimen of equipment. First the 65 has a multi threat display allowing the driver to know if multiple radar signals are detected at once and there signal strength.
Secondly, the 65 has seven user selectable options which allow simple programming. To access this mode one must depress a pair of buttons simultaneously for a few seconds. Once done one button scrolls through the devices menu while the other allows the user to make the selection.

The RX 65 delivers the best long range warning on all radar bands including X, K, super wide Ka, and Ku (used primarily in Europe, but was authorized for use with in the USA over ten years ago; however the band has not been used by police radar gun manufacturers. There was one company who was toying with the idea of developing a new gun for this band but the demand by police and highway patrol has been low) and instant “POP-on”. In some cases this detector has been able to pick up radar/ laser activity up to two miles away.
The 65 has a single antenna that is bi-directional, allowing you to receive radar from front and rear. With these multiple front and rear sensors it provides 360 degree laser protection, which also includes the widest field of view.

The unit is compact and small for easy storage but the sophisticated alpha numeric display and over sixty programmable digital voice messages allows easy recognition of alerts as well as the tech display will show the exact frequency of the radar signal detected (X band, K band etc…) Trusted and respected the 65 virtually eliminates false alerts, which is the number once complaint against most of the detectors on the market. Many other detectors will alert the driver to grocery store security systems, automatic door openers, motion sensors which can be annoying to the driver. This detector comes preloaded with thousands of red light camera and fixed camera locations throughout the country with its GPS capability. The voice alerts allows the driver to keep there eyes on the road but still be aware what is coming up ahead.

This idea sounds like utter blasphemy to most law enforcement agencies and to many politicians! In their view this is akin to cracking the seals on the Book of the Dead and waiting for all of Hades and global destruction to break loose. Yet the stated goal of every law enforcement agency which patrols our highways and interstates is to make our roads safer. Politicians also tout this goal, complete with halos above their heads, when proposing legislation to ban radar detectors. Presently only about 4% of drivers use radar detectors. Yet, if this number were to rise to at least 10% or perhaps to 15% then law enforcement officers could usefully patrol much larger stretches of our highways while at the same time being far more effective at keeping most motorist speeds within reasonable and safe bounds. Why, you have got to wonder? Quite simply because if 10% or more of drivers with radar detectors slow down to the posted speed limit when detecting radar then the effect is that nearly all other drivers will be forced to slow down to the posted speed limit. Why? Because if 10% or more of drivers with radar detectors have slowed down, then it will either be much more difficult to pass these drivers or because other drivers will see the alerts from the radar detectors within the cars of the 10% or more of drivers who use radar detectors. It really is a simple argument which for example the state of Georgia has employed for years to great effect on their interstate highways even though other states have considerably higher fines for speeding. Thus increased radar detector usage would result not only in our roads being safer, but also in significantly less law enforcement manpower needed to patrol given stretches of highways and interstates.

A good example is Virginia where radar detectors are illegal. Many radar detector users note that VA troopers, compared to their own states where radar detectors are legal, must employ nearly four times the manpower to have any effect on reducing speeding or to reduce traffic flow to safe and reasonable limits, quite simply because VA motorists who can’t use radar detectors are completely unaware that they are under surveillance by law enforcement. Moreover, VA law enforcement tends to only go after motorists who exceed 80 m.p.h. since then additional and very expensive revenue generating “reckless driving” fines are imposed, regardless of the fact that the general traffic flow on VA’ rural and highways and interstates averages 78 m.p.h.! In other words, VA politicians have made it “extremely profitable” to only go after drivers within VA who have excessively exceeded the posted speed limit or who are driving at more than 80 m.p.h.. So this brings up another reason to use a radar detector. Contrary to what most law enforcement agencies and politicians preach, the bountiful revenue from speeding citations consistently and politically outweighs all agency cited safety goals of keeping our roads safer for all motorists.

The point which is trying to be made is that, contrary to what both the general public and many politicians erroneously perceive, is that radar detectors are far from the “evil” or illegal devices which they have been made out to be. The radar detector manufactures have known all of the above facts for years. This is why they have no moral reservations regarding the products which they manufacture, market and sell. Its about time that the general public becomes aware of the numerous positive benefits of using radar detectors. These devices, when properly and intelligently used, actually make motorists safer drivers — simply because they are far more aware of both their driving habits and their surrounding driving conditions. Moreover, politicians who are truly interested in making our highways and interstates safer, regardless of revenue, should realize that motorists using radar detectors are less likely to excessively speed, are more likely to drive at or very close to the posted speed limit, are more likely to be more alert and aware of other vehicles and road conditions, and that they have a positive effect on slowing down other motorists who are not using radar detectors. In other words, radar detectors communicate to motorists that they are under surveillance and that they should slow down to the posted speed limit. Yet this only works if police officers transmit radar gun signals and if motorists are allowed or even encouraged to freely use radar detectors to receive these signals in order to “get the message” from law enforcement that they are aggressively monitoring traffic conditions.

After receiving a speeding ticket and paying fines and driving school I purchased the Beltronic GX65 radar detector. The GX65 provides precision in long range warnings against speed traps, and conventional radar and laser detectors. This detector has the most amazing features. First of all its size is very accommodating. It fits easily on the dash of your vehicle with a quick release mounting system so that you can remove the detector and it not is visible while your car is parked. The display features include five levels of brightness as well as a complete darkness mode. The LED lighting provides bright readable and reliable messages.

The GX65 has the ability to pick up all band forms of both radar and laser that any law enforcement patrol may be using. The detector has speed sensitivity as well as a speed check function which provides the driver with real time protection based on your driving speed.

This detector has built in a GPS system as well as a safety camera database which provides warning locations throughout the country. The mark locator which enables the driver to add known red light cameras as well as speed traps and other spots for references in the future

Other great features include l pop radar alerts, an advanced auto scan, clear voice alerts with volume control. There is also an auto mute feature which allows the user to turn off the voice activation alerts. The options are all user friendly (brightness controls with dark mode as mentioned earlier, as well as the volume control).

This detector also has programmable features which include power on indicators, voice alerts, and a power on sequence also a signal meter. The feature can be placed in a city mode pattern as well as for highway driving. The many functions allows any techie person the ability to custom his/her detector for personal use.

One of the nicest features of this detector is that eliminates one of the biggest complaints that most owners of other radar detectors and laser jammers have is the false alarms. Many of the detectors will alarm at convent stores, shopping malls, etc… you can be sure that when your detector alarms it is for a specific reason and not at the doors to your local Safeway.

Beltronics GX65 also comes with the quick release windshield mounting kit, a smart power plug that is coiled for easy use, a travel case and an owner’s manual for references and more explanations of features.

What Is a Radar Detector?

A radar detector is simply a radio frequency receiver which is tuned to detect the microwave radio signal frequencies produced by police radar guns. A lot of other devices also produce these same radio frequencies. The automatic door opener at your local supermarket, which your kids love to run up to so that they can watch the doors magically open, most likely uses a microwave radio transceiver which is very similar to the one used inside a police radar gun. Some security systems use microwave transceivers to detect the motion of burglars. A radar detector simply produces visual and audio alerts which get stronger as the radar detector gets closer to the source of the microwave radio signal. So in essence a radar detector is just like your car’s AM radio in that a radar detector’s alert gets stronger, just as your AM radio gets louder the closer you get to the broadcast signals from the AM radio station’s antenna. Indeed, some very old radar detector models had a speaker which simply produced a tone that became louder as the radar detector got closer to the radio source. In short, radar detectors are simply radio receivers — nothing more and nothing less.

The general public holds the very common misconception that using a radar detector is either illegal or that the only reason for using a radar detector is to break the law. In the United States, radar detectors are completely legal to use in all states except in Virginia and in the District of Columbia. Indeed, many states repealed their bans against radar detectors after the 55 mph national speed limit was repealed by congress years ago. Yet these very same states have seen a reduction over the years in highway death rates even though they both raised their speed limits and made radar detectors legal to use. Moreover, the vast majority of experienced drivers who use radar detectors do not use these devices to intentionally break the law. Instead most radar detector owners use these devices to be more aware of their driving habits so that they do not break the law. There are exceptions of course. Most notable are teenagers and young adults who are still infatuated with the thrill of driving a car and sometimes driving really fast! We have all been there as a young adult. If you don’t admit to this then either you are lying to yourself or you were one of the small class of young drivers who took their driving responsibilities extraordinarily seriously. Well, regardless of whether or not these young drivers have a radar detector, their excessive driving habits will eventually get them a speeding ticket. Radar detectors do not make you immune to speeding tickets, and a radar detector is not a magical device which gives you either the right to break the law or the ability to do so with impunity. Any experienced driver who has used a radar detector for a considerable amount of time will tell you this too.

Most experienced radar detector users generally drive with the flow of traffic and use these handy electronic devices to alert them about the presence of an upcoming speed trap, to frequently alert them on days when law enforcement is very active, to pass the time on long road trips, and to help keep them more alert to their driving and the road conditions in general. Indeed, years ago a study was published which statistically proved that drivers who use radar detectors were safer drivers and were involved in fewer accidents compared to drivers who do not use radar detectors. These very same experienced radar detector users also know that no electronic device, no matter how sophisticated, is going to prevent them from getting speeding tickets if they consistently speed. On days when law enforcement is very active, experienced radar detector users simply continuously drive at or below the posted speed limit and then relax and enjoy their drive. This generally causes other cars to drive slower as well. Yet radar detector owners do then enjoy watching other drivers who are speeding being pulled over simply because they weren’t aware that their speed was being monitored by law enforcement.

Why Should I Use a Radar Detector?

This is a good question, especially if you are a law abiding citizen! Quite simply, to help you be more aware of your driving habits, to stay better alert on long road trips, to be more aware of traffic around you, and to be more aware of road conditions in general. Numerous NHTSA and state studies have shown that the majority of drivers tend to drive at speeds which they feel are both comfortable and safe for the general road conditions — regardless of the posted speed limit. This is why the government and states saw a sudden drop in accident and highway death rates when speed limits were raised from the national 55 mph speed limit. What? That doesn’t seem to make sense. After all, we have all been told for years that speed kills! When the national speed limit was 55 mph, most drivers ignored it. Yet many conscientious drivers did drive at the 55 mph speed limit. This created large discrepancies in the speeds of vehicles on highways and interstates and contributed to accidents. A U.S. government publication notes that motorists are much safer when all vehicles are traveling at very similar speeds. Lane changes, one of the prevailing causes of highway accidents, are in general much safer to accomplish if all of the surrounding vehicles are traveling at similar speeds.

As mentioned, drivers tend to drive at a speed which they feel is both safe and comfortable — regardless of the posted speed limit. Unfortunately in some areas the speed limit is set at an unreasonably slower speed compared to the speed at which 85% of drivers feel is the correct and safe driving speed. The general public commonly refers to these areas as “speed traps”, and law enforcement and local officials love these areas since they are a source of juicy revenue from speeding tickets. This is a good example of where a radar detector can save you, the law abiding citizen who is merely safely traveling along with the general flow of traffic, from being singled out to receive a speeding ticket. Regardless of what law enforcement agencies proclaim, out-of-state motorists tend to be unfairly targeted since the presumption is that out-of-state motorists will simply pay their fines rather than waiting around for a couple of weeks for their court dates. The right to a speedy trial pretty much goes out the window for out-of-state motorists since most courts are backlogged to begin with, and since very few out-of-state motorists will either hang around or return for their court date to rightfully contest an unfair and biased speeding ticket.

Radar detectors are fun on long road trips! Why? Because a radar detector gives you something to do and to observe while driving along for hours on end. Some radar detector models even have features to deliberately help keep you alert on long drives. Thus a radar detector can help to keep you much more alert on those long and monotonous drives. More importantly and especially when traveling out-of-state and through unfamiliar territory, a radar detector will keep you more alert as you approach towns, cities, or large metropolitan areas. This extra “road awareness” is a key factor not only in helping to prevent you from getting an unintentional speeding ticket, but also to let you know of areas where the local law enforcement likes to operate. Law enforcement, in their effort to make our highways safer, likes to operate radar in areas where both speeding and accidents are common. Thus a radar detector can serve as your advance warning system, much like a weather radio warns you of approaching severe weather, for oncoming road conditions and local driver habits which could make your drive more dangerous.

A radar detector can warn you of an accident scene which is located a mile or more down the road ahead. Many law enforcement agencies teach their officers to leave their radar guns turned on when they are at an accident scene. Thus your radar detector can give you advance warning that “something is up” regarding the road ahead. This in turn will make you more aware that you should be prepared to slow down well before approaching an accident scene. Some municipalities have also implemented the Safety Warning System (SWS) by installing special radar transmitters which radiate warning messages to motorists equipped with radar detectors which can both detect and display SWS text warning messages. This is a technology which, although around for years, has only seen sparse implementation across the United States. SWS is in need of some serious federal funding since radar detector manufacturers have equipped their products with this feature for several years now. Imagine approaching a railroad crossing and having your radar detector warn you via a text message that a train is approaching, or imagine seeing a text message for an approaching emergency vehicle! The life which your radar detector could save may well be your own.

Can Radar Detector Usage Make Our Roads Safer?

Check out the Escort Passport 8500

Over 41 million speeding tickets were written nationwide in 2003. That translates to approximately a 21% chance every year that you, the average law abiding citizen, will be issued a speeding ticket. The average driver is practically guaranteed of getting a speeding ticket once every five years. The average speeding ticket fine including court costs is $150. That translates to over 6 billion additional revenue dollars for local governments every year! And of course a speeding ticket almost always results in higher insurance premiums for several years. A single speeding ticket could cost you over $750 in increased insurance premiums over 3 years since most insurance companies surcharge over a 3 year period. No wonder insurance companies buy radar and laser guns for police departments. The reality is that insurance companies reap very substantial financial windfalls, to the tune of over 10 billion every year, for their relatively cheap investments in equipment.

new speed trap

Almost every motorist at some point gets a speeding citation which they feel was either unfairly or erroneously given. Yet motorists rarely fight these citations since the citing officer is also an officer of the court. In the eyes of the court, the officer’s word is always golden yet the motorist’s word is always suspect. Unfair speeding citations which result in fines and increased insurance rates are what drive motorists to purchase radar detectors. There are literally hundreds of radar detector models to chose from since the market is flooded with cheap import brand radar detectors which have poor performance. On the other hand the general consensus is that the products produced in North America by Bel, Escort, Whistler and Valentine perform extremely well. This still leaves a lot of good radar detector models to choose from.

Where can you go in order to learn about radar detectors or other types of speed surveillance countermeasures? Quite simply, the only place aside from manufacturer web sites are on-line forums which are dedicated to the use of these products. These forums are similar to online car forums where you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about your car. Radar detector and speed countermeasures forums forums are filled with knowledgeable enthusiasts who can answer all of your questions and help guide you in finding the product which is best suited for both your needs and your budget. Recommended forums, in order of popularity:

The Radar Detector Jammer Forum (http://www.radardetector.net/) is both the most popular and oldest online enthusiast’s forum about all types of speed measurement countermeasures. The forum was created by “Radar Roy” who is a retired law enforcement officer.

Radar Detector Reviews (http://www.radarreviews.net/) is a relatively new forum which also is an excellent source of information.

The Speed Trap Hunter Forum (http://www.speedtraphunter.net/) is more of crossover forum between the radar detector and law enforcement industries, which is unusual since both industries tend to be at odds with each other.

One additional and highly recommended additional online resource, even though its not a forum, is:

Guys of LIDAR (http://www.guysoflidar.com/) provides a wealth of information and independent test reports for various radar detector and laser countermeasure products. Guys of LIDAR is a group of individuals who independently test products, yet refuse to accept any form of financial compensation or gifts from industry manufacturers.

GX65 Series Radar Detector

Beltronics’s new GX65 Professional Series radar detector is nothing short of an engineering marvel which combines Bel’s proven RX65 performance with GPS, giving the new GX65 a host of very useful features never seen before in any Bel radar detector. What else makes the new Beltronics GX65 radar detector so special compared to conventional radar detectors? This is a question which begs a multi-part answer in order to fully describe the individual feature benefits built into Bel’s new GX65 Professional Series radar detector.

The GX65’s AlertLock feature gives the user the ability to permanently lock out known false alerts which are primarily caused by microwave automatic door openers used at business entrances. Once a false alert location is stored into the GX65’s computer, then the GX65 will no longer alert to these false alert sources when the user drives by this location in the future.

Bel’s GX65 has excellent performance with regards to detecting all police radar and laser gun models which are used throughout North America, including laser guns which operate in “stealth” mode. The Bel GX65 easily detects all police radar guns with ease and with up to ten times more range compared to virtually all import brand radar detector models.

The GX65’s Variable Speed Sensitivity mode, an alternative to TrueLock, will automatically lower its X and K band sensitivity when you are driving at considerably slower speeds. No longer will you have to listen to a conventional radar detector giving you constant false alerts from nearby microwave door openers and security systems while you are driving slowly, driving in stop-and-go traffic, or stopped at a traffic light.

The Bel GX65’s built-in and updateable Safety Camera Database alerts you when you are approaching safety camera equipped intersections. The general public commonly refers to these safety cameras as “red light” cameras since their primary purpose is to raise revenue. Your GX65 will warn you ahead of time as you approach a safety camera equipped traffic intersection.

The GX65, thanks to its built-in GPS technology, also allows the user to mark specific locations such as police speed traps, school and construction zones, and new red light camera locations.

The GX65 is Web Ready. GX65 owners can download Bel’s software program which allows the GX65 to be programmed via its built-in USB port with a updated Safety Camera Databases or with new firmware.

SpeedCheck technology allows the GX65 to automatically display your speed when the GX65 begins to alert to police radar or laser guns. The GX65 can additionally be programmed to always display your speed.

In summary, the new Beltronics GX65 Professional Series radar detector is far more than just an ordinary radar detector. The GX65’s superb set of very useful features makes it one of the most technologically advanced radar detectors which you can buy from any manufacturer at any price. Once you have used Bel’s new GX65, you will never go back to using a conventional radar detector.

No need to leave the detector behind while traveling–we include the hard sided protective carrying case so the radar detector goes where you go.
